About me

Hands-on fullstack developer with 15+ years building web applications and digital platforms, with a strong background in frontend engineering and modern JavaScript/TypeScript development.

My current stack includes React, Next.js, TypeScript and component-based frontend development, backed by extensive experience integrating frontend applications with PHP/Laravel backends, REST APIs and relational databases.

I remain directly involved in implementation while also bringing experience in application architecture, frontend/backend boundaries, development standards, code review, Docker environments and automated delivery.

Work experience

Lead Developer — CBTW · via STEPHANZYCH

Brussels, Belgium · 2023 – Present

Hands-on lead developer in the technical team that came out of the Cherry Pulp integration, currently four to five engineers. I develop day to day across frontend, backend and infrastructure while leading technical direction and modernising how the team builds and ships applications.

Fullstack application development

  • Develop and maintain applications across JavaScript / TypeScript frontend, backend, API and database layers
  • Own architecture and technical decisions across concurrent projects, including project structure and backend / API / frontend boundaries
  • Maintain and evolve internal project foundations and tooling originally built at Cherry Pulp and still used within CBTW
  • Define technical standards, development conventions and code review practice
  • Support developers through review and technical guidance while remaining directly involved in implementation
  • Work across distributed international teams, including enterprise environments using Microsoft internal tooling and AWS

Platform & delivery modernisation

  • Introduced a shared Docker local development environment using Traefik, PHP, MariaDB and phpMyAdmin as the common baseline for projects
  • Building GitLab CI pipelines and secured containerised deployment on AWS Lightsail, replacing manual and FTP-based deployment and moving off Laravel Forge
  • Adding observability with Grafana, Prometheus and Loki
  • Roll out tooling and workflow improvements project by project alongside ongoing client delivery

Co-Founder / CTO / Head of Frontend — Cherry Pulp

Brussels, Belgium · 2013 – 2024 · acquired by CBTW in 2023, transition completed in 2024

Co-founded Cherry Pulp and helped grow it into a digital agency of around 20 people building custom websites, digital platforms and web applications. My role started in frontend leadership and expanded into technical ownership across the company while remaining hands-on throughout.

Frontend & fullstack engineering

  • Delivered 200+ web platforms and digital products
  • Owned frontend technical direction across client projects and development teams
  • Designed frontend/backend application boundaries across JavaScript applications, REST APIs, WordPress and Laravel backends
  • Worked across JavaScript frontend applications and component-based development approaches while supporting multiple generations of frontend technology
  • Defined technical direction and project architecture across client work: stack selection, project structure and integration boundaries
  • Established reusable boilerplates, conventions and CLI tooling that made project setup faster and maintenance more predictable
  • Designed a modular delivery approach around Docker, structured conventions and automated deployment workflows

Technical ownership & team

  • Helped grow the company from 4 to 20 people
  • Supported and mentored development teams, up to 10–12 developers at peak
  • Led technical scoping, estimation and client-facing technical advisory through discovery and delivery
  • Took part in technical hiring and onboarding
  • Set technical and frontend development standards across the company

Selected engineering work

  • stephan.zych.be, TypeScript web application and Go runtime from one content source. One Markdown/JSON content source feeds two independent applications: an Eleventy/Lit/TypeScript web application and a Go SSH/TUI application. The web runtime uses TypeScript and Web Components, while GitHub Actions validates the repository, builds both container images separately, publishes them to GHCR and deploys automatically to DigitalOcean.github.com/monkeymonk/stephan.zych.be
  • Developer tooling around coding agents. A Go tool renders one canonical source — agents, skills, MCP servers, rules and reusable instructions — into the configuration of several coding-agent CLIs. Agent work runs on deterministic checks, reviewed diffs and Git worktrees, with sandboxing using Bubblewrap, Landlock and seccomp kept outside the agent's control.stephan.zych.be/blog/ai-agent-sandboxing/
